5 eco-conscious clothing pieces to buy

Thrive editor Niki Bezzant seeks out eco-conscious clothing, and finds reversible togs sewn by former refugees and a pretty bra and knickers made from recycled fishing nets.

Kowtow summer range

Ethical fashion superstar Kowtow has released its summer range. The collection, titled Nature, is made from soft organic cotton, and the brand says it’s the result of exploring Kowtow’s “emotional connection with nature reflecting moments that are both radical and quiet between land, sea and sky.”

Kowtow Solstice dress, $349.

Denim Parasol hats in greige and blue, $129.

Eco-friendly lingerie

Kiwi favourite Bendon Lingerie has launched a sustainable collection, Conscious Simplicity. A first in the brand’s nearly 75-year history, the range is made with recycled materials including recycled nylon and fishing nets, and features botanically inspired lace.

Bendon Conscious Simplicity Underwire Bra, $69.95, and Boyleg Brief, $34.95.

Sustainable jewellery

Mangawhai-based fashion and jewellery company Luna & Rose has a strong sustainable focus. Their silver jewellery is made with a high component of recycled silver, extracted and purified from recycled laptops, computers and iPhones. Solid gold pieces are made to order in New Zealand, using recycled gold sourced and cast locally.

St Vincent de Paul pendant in gold, $189.

From gym to pool in ethical style

Nisa is a very special Wellington social enterprise brand whose ethical garments are hand-sewn by women from refugee and migrant backgrounds. I love my Nisa leggings, which are made from soft, comfortable fabric manufactured from recycled fishing nets, textile waste and plastic bottles. They also feature pockets, my number one requirement for leggings! Nisa has now launched a range of swimwear. Made in New Zealand from regenerated nylon, the range includes seven fully reversible garments (great idea) in different levels of coverage, including a boy short and rash top, in sizes XS-2XL.
